Washington, January 6 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump and his team are exploring various options for acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, including using the military, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt announced in an emailed statement to Xinhua on Tuesday.

"The President and his team are discussing a range of options to achieve this important foreign policy objective, and, of course, the use of the U.S. military is always an option for the Commander-in-Chief," she said. "President Trump has made clear that the acquisition of Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and vital to deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region," Leavitt noted.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller stated on Monday that no one would go to war with the United States over Greenland. Washington's official position is that Greenland should be part of the United States, he said in an interview with CNN.

"We absolutely need Greenland. We need it for defense," Trump emphasized in a telephone interview with The Atlantic on Sunday. Others can decide for themselves what the recent American operation in Venezuela means for Greenland, the White House chief added.

"If the US decides to attack another NATO country, then everything will end, including NATO, and therefore the security system that was founded after the end of World War II," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Monday.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and Denmark issued a joint statement on Tuesday saying that "Denmark and Greenland, and they alone, must decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland."

The leaders emphasized that Arctic security remains a key priority for Europe and is crucial to international and transatlantic security. NATO has made clear that the Arctic region is a priority, and European allies are increasing their presence in the region, the statement noted.
