BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — The China Earthquake Administration has activated a Level 4 earthquake alert after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Wednesday.
The earthquake occurred at 3:17 a.m. The epicenter was located at 37.58 degrees north latitude and 74.93 degrees east longitude. The hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to data from the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
Following the earthquake, the China Earthquake Administration ordered the CCSS and the Xinjiang Seismological Administration to launch emergency response activities, calling for joint consultations with relevant authorities, strengthening seismic monitoring, assessing the post-earthquake situation, and promptly updating information.
According to the department, the average elevation above sea level within a 10-kilometer radius of the earthquake's epicenter is approximately 4,545 meters. There have been no reports of casualties or injuries so far. -0-
