BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — More and more Taiwanese are beginning to realize that the Lai Qingde administration's persistent calls for separatism will only lead to war and disaster on the island, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday.

Chen Binhua made the statement at a regular departmental press conference, commenting on recent public opinion polls on the island, which showed that more than 60 percent of Taiwanese residents do not want to see themselves or their family members sent to the battlefield in the event of a conflict between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Peace is the shared aspiration of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and national reunification is the only realistic path to Taiwan's future, stated Chen Binhua. He called on Taiwan compatriots to oppose separatist activities, jointly safeguard peace and stability on both sides of the Strait, and promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.

When asked to comment on Taiwanese media reports that public dissatisfaction with Lai Qingde's rule had remained above 50 percent for six consecutive months, Chen Binhua said the Lai Qingde administration had escalated separatist rhetoric, obstructed cross-strait exchanges, made unprincipled concessions to external forces at the expense of Taiwan's interests, and insisted on actions that undermine Taiwan's development and the well-being of its people, adding that these actions run counter to the island's prevailing public opinion.

Responding to a question about the Taiwan administration's claim that the Chinese mainland launched cyberattacks against the island, Chen Binhua said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration in Taiwan is spreading slander and smearing the Chinese mainland to divert attention from its own poor governance. He added that relevant mainland agencies had previously identified and exposed cyberattacks carried out by Taiwan-linked organizations. -0-
