Madrid, January 7 (Xinhua) — The US's violent takeover of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro risks plunging the world into a new, dangerous era, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Tuesday, stressing that his country "will not remain silent" in the face of violations of international law.
"The operation in Caracas creates a terrible and very dangerous precedent that is pushing the world towards a future full of uncertainty and instability, as has happened after other oil-driven invasions," P. Sánchez told reporters after a meeting of the "coalition of the willing" in Paris.
He stressed that Spain cannot recognize the legitimacy of military actions that violate international law and whose only purpose appears to be to overthrow the government of another country in order to seize its natural resources.
The Spanish government sharply criticized the US attack on Venezuela. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez stated on Monday that the US actions were "clearly contrary to international law" and that "the use of violence and force must be completely excluded" from foreign policy.
P. Sanchez added that Spain also cannot accept the threat to Denmark's territorial integrity, referring to US President Donald Trump's statements about his intention to annex Greenland.
"We will not remain silent in the face of increasingly frequent violations of international law. We will always stand on the side of the rule of law. We will use all the resources at our disposal to strengthen multilateralism," the Spanish prime minister noted.
