CARACAS, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — Venezuela's former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, was sworn in Monday as the country's interim president after President Nicolas Maduro was forcibly removed from the country by the United States.
"I come with pain because of the suffering inflicted on the Venezuelan people following the illegal military aggression against our homeland," D. Rodríguez said at an official ceremony held in Caracas. "I swear by the Venezuelan people that I will not rest for a moment to guarantee peace in the Republic," she added.
The politician also called for unity to protect the country “in these terrible hours of threat to the stability and peace of the nation.”
Early on the morning of January 3, US forces captured Maduro and his wife, who were then taken into custody in New York, sparking widespread condemnation.
