NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made his first court appearance in New York on Monday morning after being captured by U.S. forces in his country.

Photos published in American media show Maduro, accompanied by armed law enforcement officers, arriving in Manhattan by helicopter from a detention center in Brooklyn and being transferred to an armored vehicle.

Protesters gathered outside the courthouse chanted slogans and held signs reading "Free Maduro!" and "USA, hands off Venezuela!"

On January 3, American troops carried out an operation to kidnap N. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, after which they were taken out of Venezuela and placed into custody in New York. –0–
