BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — The opening ceremony of the 37th International Ice Sculpture Competition and the 28th International Snow Sculpture Competition was held at the world's largest ice and snow theme park, the Great World of Ice and Snow, in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Jan. 2.

According to the Heilongjiang Daily, the two events were organized by the Harbin City People's Government.

The ice sculpture competition kicked off the same day and attracted 76 artists from 38 teams representing 12 countries, including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, the United States, the Republic of Korea, and France. Over the course of three days, ice carvers participated in the competition at the "Great World of Ice and Snow" park and in the square in front of the city's Exhibition and Conference Center, creating artistic works from blocks of ice.

The snow sculpture competition will take place from January 6th to 9th at the International Snow Sculpture Art Fair in the Taiyangdao (Island of the Sun) tourist resort. Twenty-five teams from 13 countries, including China, Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Poland, Belgium, and the Republic of Korea, will participate. The event will reach a record-breaking scale: over one hundred artists will create large-scale snow sculptures over four days.
