HAIKOU, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Duty-free sales in southern China's resort island province of Hainan soared during the three-day Lunar New Year holiday, with offshore duty-free sales reaching 712 million yuan (about 101.3 million U.S. dollars) from Jan. 1 to 3, 2026, up 128.9 percent from the same period in 2025, Haikou Customs said Sunday.
Customs recorded the sale of 442,000 duty-free goods during the three-day holiday, up 52.4 percent year-on-year, while the number of buyers rose 60.6 percent year-on-year to 83,500, the customs statement said.
Major duty-free shops ran various promotions, including discounts and vouchers. Many offered entertainment events and free shuttle buses to attract shoppers.
The rapid growth in sales was driven by the new duty-free shopping policy, introduced in November 2025, which expanded the range of goods available in duty-free shops. Mini drones and electric guitars became popular new items, while imported goods such as baby food and diapers were in high demand among locals.
Travelers visiting Hainan Island currently enjoy a duty-free shopping quota of 100,000 yuan per person per year. Since the annual duty-free shopping quota was increased from 30,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan per person on July 1, 2020, Hainan Province has seen strong sales at offshore duty-free shops. -0-
