BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — China calls on the United States to immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday.

The Chinese diplomat made this comment, at the request of journalists, regarding media reports that the US sent troops on Saturday to capture Nicolas Maduro and his wife and remove them from the country. Governments of many countries have expressed objections to this.

China calls on the United States to ensure the personal safety of N. Maduro and his wife, immediately release them, stop the overthrow of the Venezuelan government, and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiations, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said. -0-
