Athens, January 4 (Xinhua) — All flights to and from Greece were suspended on Sunday after a nationwide communications outage disrupted air traffic control systems, Greek state broadcaster ERT reported.
The problem, which occurred around 09:35 local time /07:35 GMT/, affected Greek airspace and caused the suspension of arrivals and departures at Athens International Airport, as well as at regional airports.
According to preliminary information, the disruption was caused by a malfunction in the radio communications systems of the Athens and Macedonian air traffic control centers, leading to the closure of the Athens flight information region. Only aircraft already in the air were serviced, while many other flights were diverted to Turkey.
Hundreds of passengers were stranded at airports where they were repeatedly told that flights had been suspended due to a technical problem.
