Aden, Yemen, January 2 (Xinhua) — Saudi Arabian warplanes have intensified airstrikes on several targets in the oil-rich Hadramaut province in southeastern Yemen, including Seiyoun Airport and surrounding areas, local media reported on Friday.

According to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) satellite channel AIC, seven members of one family were killed in the strikes on the airport and nearby residential buildings.

Local residents told Xinhua that the airstrikes caused panic among civilians, forcing many families to flee their homes.

The intense Saudi airstrikes come amid fierce clashes between STC forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces for control of military bases and government institutions in Hadramaut.

According to local sources, fighting has escalated in recent hours as both sides seek to expand their influence in the strategically important region.
