Quito, January 1 (Xinhua) — Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a new 60-day state of emergency in nine provinces and three municipalities due to rising criminal violence, local media reported on Thursday.

The decree signed by the president on Wednesday will be in effect from Thursday in the provinces of Guayas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Pichincha and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, as well as in the province of Sucumbíos.

In addition, a state of emergency has been declared in the municipality of La Mana in the province of Cotopaxi, as well as in the municipalities of Las Naves and Echeandía in the province of Bolívar.

The President said the measures are being taken for 60 days to contain and reduce intense violence, neutralize existing or impending threats, and disrupt criminal structures.

According to national police data, from November 1 to December 23 of last year, 1,232 intentional homicides were recorded in the Ecuadorian provinces of Guayas, Los Rios, Manabí, El Oro, Pichincha, Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas and Sucumbíos. –0–
