New York, January 2 (Xinhua) — U.S. Democratic Party member Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City's new mayor on Thursday. He became the first Muslim mayor of America's largest city by population and pledged to address the city's housing affordability crisis.
At his inauguration ceremony, Z. Mamdani reiterated his campaign promises to make the city more affordable for working people. These included freezing rents, taxing the wealthiest, abolishing bus fares, introducing a free childcare program, and launching a pilot project to create city-subsidized grocery stores.
The 34-year-old mayor promised to implement a program of safety, affordability, and abundance, in which “government looks and lives like the people it represents, never backs down from fighting corporate greed, and isn’t afraid to take on challenges others find too difficult.”
Z. Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, became New York City's first Muslim mayor after defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo last November. –0–
