Moscow, December 30 /Xinhua/ — Russia recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposes any form of "independence" for the island. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced this on Tuesday.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued this statement in response to a corresponding inquiry, which concerned the recent approval by the United States of large-scale arms sales to Taiwan, which constitutes gross interference in China's internal affairs, undermines the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the PRC, is considered a serious challenge to peace in the Taiwan Strait and sends an extremely wrong signal to separatist forces advocating for "Taiwan independence."
"A number of countries, while declaring their commitment to the one-China principle, advocate maintaining the status quo. De facto, this means they disagree with the principle of China's national reunification," the Russian Foreign Ministry noted. "Today, Taiwan is effectively being used as an instrument of military-strategic containment against China."
"Russia's fundamental position on the Taiwan issue is well known, unchanged, and has been repeatedly reaffirmed at the highest level. Russia recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposes any form of independence for the island. We believe that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for the PRC. Beijing has every legitimate basis for defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
