WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump said Monday he would seek to quickly launch the second phase of the Gaza peace plan, stressing that disarming Hamas would be a central condition.

"Very quickly, as quickly as we can, but there must be disarmament," he told reporters while welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The president also emphasized that reconstruction of the Gaza Strip could begin "very soon."

The second phase of the peace plan calls for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, the beginning of reconstruction and the establishment of a transitional governing body in the Palestinian enclave.

Gaza health authorities reported on Saturday that the death toll among Palestinians since October 2023 has reached 71,266, with another 171,219 injured.

Since October 10, when the current ceasefire agreement took effect, 414 Palestinians have been killed and another 1,142 injured. –0–
