Riyadh/Aden, Yemen, December 30 (Xinhua) — Saudi Arabian warplanes carried out airstrikes on Tuesday morning on the port of Al-Mukalla in the oil-rich Hadramaut province in southeastern Yemen, a local security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua.
According to him, the port area was hit several times, resulting in loud explosions. Following the bombing, a fire broke out near the port, causing sirens to sound in the surrounding area, the source added.
No official information on the nature or extent of damage caused by the airstrikes has yet been released, and there have been no reports of casualties.
The Saudi Arabian News Agency (SPA) reported that the Saudi-led coalition carried out a "limited" military operation targeting weapons and military equipment unloaded from ships at the port of Al-Mukalla.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said two ships sailing from the port of Fujairah entered the port of Al-Mukalla on Saturday and Sunday without official permission.
According to him, the crews of the two vessels turned off their tracking systems and unloaded a large quantity of weapons and military equipment to support the Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces in the Hadramaut and Al-Mahra provinces in eastern Yemen. –0–
