OTTAWA, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced additional financial assistance to Ukraine on Saturday during a meeting with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to a press release published on the Canadian Prime Minister's official website, the Government of Canada will provide Ukraine with 2.5 billion Canadian dollars (US$1.83 billion). This funding will enable the International Monetary Fund to provide a loan to Ukraine and will also unlock other debt service suspension and loan guarantee programs.
M. Carney and V. Zelenskyy held a bilateral meeting in Halifax, Canada, during which they discussed the latest developments in the ongoing negotiation process to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
M. Carney reaffirmed his country's full support for Ukraine. Both politicians participated in a conference call with European leaders to advance joint efforts to ensure Ukraine's security and reconstruction, according to a press release.
"Canada has announced additional support for Ukraine not only to help end this war, but also to help the Ukrainian people recover," said M. Carney.
On Saturday, V. Zelenskyy stopped in a Canadian city before flying to the US state of Florida, where he will hold talks with US President Donald Trump on resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
According to local media, V. Zelensky intends to discuss a 20-point peace plan with D. Trump, likely on Sunday at the American president's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. –0–
