Kunming, December 28 (Xinhua) — China intends to provide humanitarian aid to Cambodia to help settle internally displaced persons in border areas, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced Sunday in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, southwest China.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the statement during a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhon.
Following the signing of a joint ceasefire statement, the Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers, at the invitation of Wang Yi, headed delegations to Yunnan Province, where they will meet on December 28-29.
The Chinese Foreign Minister noted that China is closely monitoring the tense situation on the Cambodian-Thai border and remains committed to advancing peace through negotiations. On behalf of the Chinese side, he congratulated both countries on the ceasefire agreement.
The ceasefire marks the beginning of the peacebuilding process, Wang Yi emphasized, calling on both sides to gradually and systematically take further steps to promote a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, the resumption of normal contacts, the restoration of mutual trust, the reset of bilateral relations, and the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
The Chinese diplomat noted that both countries can effectively use the current one-on-one meeting between representatives of the diplomatic and defense ministries as an opportunity to establish flexible dialogue and communication, strengthen mutual understanding and build mutual trust.
Wang Yi added that China supports the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in fulfilling its due role and is ready to assist the ASEAN observer mission in monitoring the ceasefire.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also expressed hope that the Cambodian side will continue to strengthen the protection of Chinese citizens and projects in the country. –0–
