YANGON, December 28 (Xinhua) — Myanmar has begun the 2025 multi-party democratic general election, the first phase of which will be held on Sunday.

The elections will be held in three stages. The second stage is scheduled for January 11, 2026, and the third for January 25.

Elections will be held in 692 constituencies across the country. Around 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties are vying for seats in the two chambers of the Assembly of the Union (parliament)—the Assembly of People's Representatives (lower house), the Assembly of Nationalities (upper house), and regional legislative bodies.

The elections will determine the composition of the new parliament, which will then elect a new president. He, in turn, will form a new government.

According to the Electoral Commission, a total of 21,517 polling stations were set up across the country for the general elections.

The last general elections in Myanmar were held in November 2020. –0–
