Damascus, December 26 (Xinhua) — At least five people were killed and 21 others were injured in an explosion during Friday prayers at a mosque in the Wadi Zahab neighborhood of Homs, central Syria, Najib al-Naasan, director of the Syrian Ministry of Health's emergency medical services department, told the SANA news agency.
According to him, the death toll has only been preliminary determined. The explosion occurred at the Imam Ali Mosque, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, the official noted.
The area has been cordoned off for an investigation. Authorities said security around the blast site has been increased.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported an explosion at the mosque. It is unclear whether it was a suicide attack, the organization said.
