LOS ANGELES, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) — Powerful winter storms killed at least four people and caused extensive damage across California during the Christmas holiday.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Christmas Eve in six counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Shasta.

The official declaration of a state of emergency allows the state government to deploy additional resources and seek federal assistance to resolve the situation.

The death toll reached at least four people by Thursday, state officials said.

A 75-foot tree fell in San Diego, killing a 64-year-old man who was moving his car.

A 70-year-old woman was swept off a cliff by a massive wave at MacKerricher State Park in Mendocino County, located on the state's north coast. Although bystanders rescued her from the water, she lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another accident occurred on Sunday near Redding, where a driver became trapped in his flooded car. Also on Wednesday, a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy died in a weather-related crash.

At the height of the storms on Wednesday evening, the number of customers without power peaked at 140,000 statewide. High winds and falling trees damaged much of the electrical infrastructure.
