Tokyo, December 25 (Xinhua) — Representatives of four Nagasaki atomic bomb survivor organizations issued a statement Wednesday condemning remarks by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's office official about the need to possess nuclear weapons, local media reported.
At a press conference held the same day, representatives of the organizations stated that such statements were unacceptable and called on the Japanese government to adhere to the three non-nuclear principles, the Kyodo news agency reported.
The statement states that arguments in favor of nuclear weapons are unacceptable, as they contradict the conclusions reached by the country in the 80 years since the atomic bombings. It also calls on the government to abandon a national security policy based on nuclear deterrence.
Tadako Kawazoe, head of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Liaison Council, warned that such statements could leave Japan isolated from the international community. He believes the prime minister herself should reject the idea of Japan possessing nuclear weapons.
Shigemitsu Tanaka, head of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council, said Japan should never be the culprit of nuclear damage and stressed the need to curb any such tendency.
On December 18, the Japanese official in charge of national security in the Sanae Takaichi administration told reporters of the need to possess nuclear weapons. This statement provoked a strong reaction from the Japanese public, including atomic bomb survivors.
