Moscow, December 24 (Xinhua) – Russia has unequivocally reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of the Syrian Arab Republic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani met in Moscow on Wednesday to discuss bilateral issues, the situation in the region, and practical steps to ensure the key issue of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“I believe that the key significance of this visit is that Russia has unconditionally confirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of the Syrian Arab Republic,” Lavrov said.

"An agreement in principle has been reached on how to develop our trade and economic ties to mutual benefit, building on the foundation laid in previous decades," he emphasized.

"Today, Syrian-Russian relations are entering a new phase," said A. H. al-Shibani. He noted that the new Syria "seeks to establish balanced relations with all states." –0–
