UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sun Lei called on the United States to immediately end its anti-drug campaign against Venezuela at the Security Council on Tuesday.
The United States continues to build up its military presence off the coast of Venezuela, increasing sanctions, blockades and military threats against the country, sinking Venezuelan ships, killing their crews and seizing oil tankers, he said.
Washington has designated the Venezuelan government as a foreign terrorist organization, declared Venezuela's land, oil, and assets to be US property, and even threatened military strikes against Venezuelan territory, Sun Lei noted. US actions and rhetoric have led to ongoing tensions in the region, causing serious concern among countries in the region and the international community, the diplomat emphasized.
He said more and more countries in the region and beyond are expressing serious concern about US actions and strongly condemning them.
Venezuela, as an independent sovereign state, has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries and protect its legitimate rights and interests, which should enjoy the respect and support of the international community, the deputy permanent representative stated.
China opposes unilateralism and bullying, supports states in defending their sovereignty and dignity, and rejects violations of the UN Charter, the threat or use of force, external interference in Venezuela's internal affairs, as well as illegal unilateral sanctions or long-arm jurisdiction, Sun Lei noted.
China urges the United States to listen to the voice of the international community, stop the aforementioned actions, protect the safety of navigation and legitimate rights in accordance with international law, lift illegal unilateral sanctions, and contribute to peace, stability and development in Latin American and Caribbean countries, the diplomat said.
Latin America and the Caribbean are an integral part of the Global South and a vital force for peace and development. China is ready to work with countries in the region to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, uphold justice, and maintain regional peace and stability, Sun Lei emphasized.
