HARBIN, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — Five people trapped underground by a water leak at a coal mine in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Sunday have been confirmed dead, local authorities said Tuesday.

The tragedy occurred at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the Datongou coal mine of the Heilongjiang Fengyuan Mining Company in Jixi City, the Propaganda Department of the CPC Municipal Committee said.

Following intensive rescue efforts, the bodies of all five victims were found dead. Work is currently underway to clean up the aftermath of the accident, and the investigation into its causes continues.
