New York, December 23 (Xinhua) — The U.S. consumer confidence index fell to 89.1 in December, down from a revised 92.9 in November, research organization The Conference Board reported on Tuesday.
The December reading also came in below market expectations of 91.9, reflecting growing pessimism among U.S. consumers about the current business and employment situation amid ongoing economic uncertainty heading into the end of the year.
The Current Situation Index, based on consumers' assessment of the state of business and the labor market, fell 9.5 points to 116.8 in December. The Expectations Index, reflecting consumers' short-term forecasts for income, business, and employment, remained stable at 70.7 points, remaining below the recession threshold of 80 points. –0–
