BEIJING, December 22 (Xinhua) — The arbitrary seizure of foreign vessels by the United States constitutes a serious violation of international law, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday.
Lin Jian made the statement in response to a media inquiry regarding the US Coast Guard's seizure of a tanker carrying Venezuelan oil on December 20 local time, while a White House spokesman claimed the vessel belonged to the so-called "shadow fleet."
"China always opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council. We also oppose any actions that violate the fundamental purposes and principles of the UN Charter, infringe on the sovereignty and security of other countries, or constitute acts of unilateral bullying," Lin Jian said at a daily press conference.
He added that Venezuela has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries, and China believes that the international community understands and supports Venezuela's position in protecting its legitimate rights and interests. -0-
