Washington, December 20 (Xinhua) — The U.S. military struck more than 70 targets suspected of being affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) in central Syria on Friday. The operation was in response to a recent attack that killed two American soldiers, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported.
"This operation is critical to preventing ISIS terrorist plots and attacks on U.S. soil," said CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper. "We will continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists who seek to harm Americans and our partners throughout the region," he said in a statement.
During the operation, supported by Jordanian fighter jets, more than 100 precision-guided munitions were used. ISIS infrastructure and weapons depots were attacked, the statement said.
US President Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform TruthSocial on Friday that the Syrian government fully supported the strikes. He warned that terrorists who attempt to attack or threaten the United States "will suffer more than ever before."
According to CENTCOM, on December 13, two American service members and one American citizen were killed and three others were wounded in an ambush by ISIS militants in Syria. Since the attack, US and partner forces have conducted 10 operations in Syria and Iraq, killing or capturing 23 terrorists.
Over the past six months, U.S. and partner forces in Syria have conducted more than 80 operations “to defeat terrorists who pose a direct threat to the United States and regional security,” CENTCOM said in a statement. –0–
