Magical stories for children and adults
Among the books for very young readers is Alf Preisen's "Merry New Year." In verse, the author tells the story of how a friendly family of mice celebrates the magical holiday. The book was illustrated by master children's book illustrator Vladimir Suteev.
Another book for children is "The History of the New Year's Tree" by Alexander Tkachenko. Readers will learn how the tradition of putting up a New Year's tree originated in Russia and will also learn about holiday customs in other countries.
Young readers will also find Arkady Gaidar's "Chuk and Gek" in this collection, and join the characters on a journey to the boys' father in snowy Siberia, to the mysterious Blue Mountains.
Olga Dvoryakova's book, "The History of New Year's Toys," tells the story of what toys were used to decorate Christmas trees in the past and how they came to be, what preceded today's glittering balls and figurines, and how cardboard and even edible New Year's decorations were created.
For fans of stories about Father Frost, we've included in this selection the book "Father Frosts of Russia" by Natalia Andrianova. The author explains that Russia isn't home to just one Father Frost, but a whole family of winter wizards, each with their own story, character, and name.
For school-age readers, the book "Silver Blizzard: Christmas and Yuletide Stories" is recommended. It contains works by classics: "The Night Before Christmas" by Nikolai Gogol, stories by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leonid Andreyev, "Christmas in Moscow" by Ivan Shmelev, "The Miraculous Doctor" by Alexander Kuprin, and Anton Chekhov's humorous story "Boys." These works will be of interest not only to schoolchildren but also to adult readers.

To use all the features of the Moscow Libraries service, you need unified library cardYou can get it online at mos.ru or at any city library, where it's issued as a plastic card.
The electronic version of your library card is conveniently accessible through the "My ID" mobile app. There, your unified library card (ULC) is displayed as a barcode—you need to show it to the librarian to check out or return a book. The app also makes it easy to track the expiration dates of books borrowed from the library.
