Khartoum, December 17 (Xinhua) — At least 104 civilians have been killed in drone attacks in Sudan's Kordofan region since December 4, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on Tuesday.
“In one incident, a drone strike on a kindergarten and hospital in Kalogi (South Kordofan) killed at least 89 civilians, including eight women and 43 children,” he said.
F. Türk expressed alarm over the escalation of hostilities between warring factions in Sudan and called on all parties to the conflict, as well as influential states, to seek an immediate ceasefire and prevent further atrocities.
He also condemned the killing of six UN peacekeepers in drone strikes on Saturday against the UN base in Kadugli, South Kordofan. Attacks on peacekeeping personnel may amount to a war crime, the High Commissioner emphasized.
At least six people were killed and 12 others wounded, including medical staff, in a drone strike on Sunday in Dilling, South Kordofan, F. Türk said, noting that medical facilities and staff are protected by international humanitarian law.
