BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) — The number of digital consumers in China exceeded 958 million in the first half of 2025, highlighting the growing role of digital spending in the country's overall consumption.

According to a report released by the China Internet Information Center (CINIC), China's digital consumer base accounts for 85.3 percent of the country's total internet users.

Among them, representatives of Generation Z make up 27.2 percent of all digital consumers, while people aged 60 and older make up 12.2 percent. Users from rural areas make up 26 percent of the total.

In the first half of the year, 39.1 percent of Chinese internet users purchased smart products, including smart home devices, digital gadgets, and wearables. According to the report, approximately 8.2 percent purchased surprise boxes, intellectual property (IP)-related products, or anime-themed merchandise online.

The report emphasizes that digital cultural and entertainment content is driving growth in integrated spending across smart devices, culture, and tourism. In everyday services, by June of this year, more than 223 million consumers had used online platforms to run errands, perform household services, or make repairs.
