UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) — China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Monday called for efforts to safeguard the post-war international order.
At the UN Security Council's open debate on leadership for peace, he said that militarism and fascism had once brought unprecedented catastrophes to humanity. Any erroneous statements or actions aimed at whitewashing or denying the history of aggression challenge human conscience and undermine hard-won peace.
"We must maintain a correct view of the history of World War II, defend the results of victory in World War II, and uphold the post-war international order," the diplomat said. "We must adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, support the sovereign equality of all states, large and small, oppose unilateralism, hegemonism, and power politics, promote the democratization of international relations, and strengthen the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs," the permanent representative added.
Fu Cong called for a commitment to a political settlement as an effective path to peace. Peace is achieved not by force, but through negotiations; any conflict must be resolved at the negotiating table, he said.
"When resolving conflicts and disputes, we must promote dialogue for peace, encourage consultations and negotiations, and help all parties build mutual trust, resolve differences, and achieve consensus. We must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and take into account the legitimate interests of all parties," the diplomat stated.
Major powers, in particular, must play a constructive role, refrain from double standards or imposing their will on others, and especially avoid fueling conflicts for their own narrow interests, he added.
Fu Cong called for efforts to uphold multilateralism and strengthen international cooperation in maintaining peace.
The international system, with the UN at its core, is the foundation of global peace and development. The more uncertain the future becomes, the more urgent is the need to practice genuine multilateralism, uphold the role and authority of the UN, and ensure that the Security Council bears primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, said Fu Cong.
He also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of conflicts and wars through development. –0–
