SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) — South Korea's special investigative committee on Monday concluded its investigation into the sedition case against former President Yun Seok-yul.
Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok, who led the investigation into Yun Seok-yul's insurrection and other crimes, said at a televised press conference that his team had indicted a total of 24 people, including the former president himself, the former prime minister, the former vice prime minister for economic affairs, and other ministers and secretaries of the presidential administration.
According to the prosecutor, the investigation revealed that Yun Seok-yel, who took office in May 2022, had been preparing to introduce martial law even before October 2023 in order to monopolize and maintain his power.
To create a pretext for declaring martial law, Yun Seok-yol attempted to provoke a military response from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) by conducting unusual military operations. However, this attempt was unsuccessful, as the DPRK did not respond militarily, the prosecutor noted.
On April 4, 2025, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea upheld the impeachment petition against Yun Seok-yeol in connection with the attempted introduction of martial law in December of the previous year, formally removing him from office.
On January 26, the ousted leader was arrested on charges of organizing a rebellion. –0–
