Tokyo, December 15 (Xinhua) — Twin pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei from Tokyo's Ueno Zoo will be returned to China at the end of January. Japanese zoos will be without pandas for the first time in half a century, Kyodo News reported on Monday.

According to reports citing a source, the animals' official lease, as established by the agreement between Tokyo and Beijing, expires in February 2026. The twin pandas have lived at the Ueno Zoo since their birth.

Earlier this year, Japan repatriated four pandas from a zoo in Wakayama Prefecture to China. Since then, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei have become the only pandas in the country.
