La Paz, December 15 (Xinhua) — At least 20 people have died and more than 20 are missing after heavy rains and flooding battered villages in Bolivia's Santa Cruz department, the government announced Monday.
Bolivia's Deputy Minister of Civil Defense, Alfredo Troche, reported seven deaths as of December 14. The bodies of the remaining victims were recovered after rescue operations expanded and floodwaters receded.
“Unfortunately, at this time, 20 people have been confirmed dead, and more than two dozen are still missing,” said A. Troche, adding that the Santa Cruz department has been declared a disaster area.
Heavy rains that began on the evening of December 12 caused the Piray River and other tributaries to overflow, affecting at least 22 communities, mostly in the city of El Torno, one of the worst-hit areas. –0–
