Santiago, December 14 (Xinhua) — Voting in the second round of Chile's presidential election began on Sunday. The candidates for the presidency are Jeanette Jara, a left-wing coalition candidate, and José Antonio Cast, a conservative Republican Party candidate.

According to the Chilean Electoral Commission, voting began at 8:00 AM local time (11:00 AM GMT) and will close at 6:00 PM (21:00 GMT) that same day. More than 15 million registered voters are eligible to participate.

The candidate with the most votes will win the second round. The president-elect will take office on March 11 of next year.

In the first round, held on November 16, no candidate received more than 50% of the vote. Thus, J. Jara and J. A. Kast advanced to the second round, receiving 26.85% and 23.92% of the vote, respectively.

Both candidates focused their election platforms on improving social security, solving the problem of illegal immigration, and other issues that most concern voters. –0–
