Damascus, December 13 (Xinhua) — A joint patrol of Syrian security forces and US troops came under fire on Saturday near the city of Palmyra in central Syria, wounding several people on both sides, Syrian state media reported.
The state news agency SANA reported, citing a source in the Syrian security services, that as a result of the incident, two Syrian intelligence officers and several American soldiers were wounded, and the attacker was killed.
US troops evacuated the wounded to their military base in the al-Tanf area of southeastern Syria, near a strategic border junction with Iraq and Jordan, the agency said, without providing further details about the attack.
Following the incident, traffic on the Deir ez-Zor-Damascus highway was reportedly temporarily suspended, and increased air activity was observed due to increased security measures in the region.
There were no comments from the US.
Currently, fewer than 1,000 U.S. troops are still stationed in Syria, which the Pentagon says is part of an effort to combat Islamic State militants in the region.
