NANJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) — A civil memorial service was held in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, on Saturday to commemorate the 300,000 people who died in the tragedy as part of the 12th National Remembrance Day for the Nanjing Massacre.
Despite the winter cold, thousands of people dressed in dark clothes with a white flower on their chests gathered in the square in front of the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum to participate in the above-mentioned event.
The Chinese national flag was lowered to half-mast for the event's participants, including survivors of the massacre, local students and foreign guests.
At 10:01 a.m., an air raid siren sounded throughout Nanjing, accompanied by the blaring of car horns, traffic stopped, and pedestrians, frozen in their seats, expressed their grief for the dead in silence.
As a reminder, on December 13, 1937, Japanese militarists occupied the city of Nanjing. They then spent six weeks murdering and looting the city, resulting in the deaths of approximately 300,000 unarmed Chinese soldiers and civilians. This episode is considered one of the most barbaric in the history of World War II.
