Rabat, December 11 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the collapse of two residential buildings in the Moroccan city of Fez has risen to 22, the state prosecutor said on Wednesday, revising the previously reported figure of 19.
According to the prosecutor, the incident occurred late Tuesday evening in the Al-Mustaqbal neighborhood, when an unoccupied building collapsed, triggering the collapse of a neighboring four-story building. A traditional aqiqah (birth sacrifice) ceremony was being held in the second building.
Women and children are among the victims. Another 16 people were injured, some in serious condition. Authorities said the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.
The Judicial Police, led by the State Prosecutor, has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. According to preliminary information, both buildings were built in 2006. –0–
