LHASA, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) — Yanshiping (Drakmuk) Railway Station, located at an altitude of 4,721 meters above sea level along the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, launched passenger services on Thursday, becoming the highest passenger station on the "roof of the world" railway line.
At around 11 a.m., more than 50 passengers boarded train Z9817 bound for Lhasa, capital of Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region (XAR), at Yanshiping Station in Ando County, Nagchu City, XAR, marking the station's opening.
Yanshiping Railway Station, previously an unmanned, automated station, has been upgraded to accommodate passenger traffic due to growing travel demand and tourism development in the surrounding area, which is home to attractions such as the Tangula Mountain Range.
“The train cuts the travel time to the county seat from more than four hours by bus to just over two hours, offering a faster and safer option,” said Champa, a local herder and one of the first passengers on train Z9817, adding that the ticket price of 28.5 yuan (about $4) is much lower than the bus ticket price of 70 yuan.
According to China Railway Qinghai-Xizang Group Co., Ltd., the line's operator, Yanshiping Station will benefit more than 10,000 residents from 25 nearby villages, as well as tourists, by stimulating the development of local catering and hotel businesses.
The Qinghai-Xizang Railway opened in July 2006, connecting Lhasa and Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, ending Xizang's history without a railway connection. -0-
