BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) — China has always opposed unilateral tariff increases in all forms and calls on Mexico to correct its wrong practices of unilateralism and protectionism as soon as possible, a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said Thursday.

He made this statement in response to journalists' requests for comment on the Mexican Congress's approval of a proposal to increase tariffs on partners with whom Mexico does not have free trade agreements. The new tariffs will take effect on January 1, 2026.

“We have taken note of the relevant media reports and will closely monitor the implementation of the Mexican side’s measures and assess their impact,” the representative noted.

If implemented, these measures would significantly harm the interests of the relevant trading partners, including China, although the approved proposal included some adjustments from the September version, such as a certain degree of reduction in the proposed tariff rate for some auto parts, light industry products, and clothing and textiles, the official said.

To protect the interests of relevant industries, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce launched an investigation in late September, in accordance with the law, into Mexico's restrictive measures, which create trade and investment barriers against China. The investigation is currently ongoing.

The Chinese representative noted that China welcomes the willingness of interested countries to resolve trade and economic differences through trade and economic agreements. At the same time, any agreements should not be concluded at the expense of global trade development and China's legitimate interests.

"China hopes that Mexico will pay close attention to this issue and act prudently," said a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

He further noted that China pays special attention to Chinese-Mexican trade and economic relations and actively promotes the healthy and stable development of bilateral cooperation in the trade and investment areas.

Faced with the changing and turbulent international situation amid increasing trade protectionism, China expects Mexico to accommodate China, intensify communication and dialogue with China in the trade and economic field, properly manage differences, and deepen practical cooperation in order to jointly maintain the overall situation of bilateral trade and economic relations, the Chinese representative concluded. -0-
