Baku, December 10 (Xinhua) — A commemorative event to mark the 1,800th anniversary of the birth of eminent ancient Chinese mathematician Liu Hui, titled "Intertwining Mathematical Traditions on the Silk Road," was held in the capital of Azerbaijan on Tuesday.
The event was organized by the Scientific and Technical Society of China and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) as part of a series of events titled “Harmony of Mathematics for Millennia: Dialogue with the Universe,” dedicated to the anniversary of Liu Hui.
At the opening ceremony, ANAS President Isa Habibbayli recognized the achievements of the ancient Chinese mathematician. He stated that this event opens new horizons and prospects for the development of scientific and cultural ties between Azerbaijan and China.
"For the first time, our academy is holding a commemorative event dedicated to the anniversary of the birth of the great Chinese mathematician Liu Hui. He left behind interesting and profound scientific works in the main areas of mathematics. This event is also a good opportunity to establish our ties with the Scientific and Technical Society of China, get to know each other, and strengthen our cooperation in the future," noted I. Habibbayli.
Azerbaijan played a role as a bridge for the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge between East and West along the ancient Silk Road. I. Habibbayli emphasized that today Azerbaijan supports the Belt and Road Initiative and strives to realize its potential as a link between Europe and Asia.
"Ties between our republics will become even closer and bear great fruit. In the scientific field, at the academy level, we will closely and fruitfully cooperate on specific projects," he told Xinhua on the sidelines of the event.
Ruan Cao, Director of the Science and Technology Dissemination Center of the Chinese Society for Science and Technology, noted that the 1800th anniversary of Liu Hui's birth was the first anniversary of a scientist to be successfully included in the UNESCO list of commemorative dates at China's initiative.
According to Ruan Cao, the anniversary event aims to commemorate the great achievements and thoughts of this ancient Chinese mathematician, his outstanding contribution to the development of human civilization, and to promote the deepening of scientific, technical, and humanitarian exchanges between China and Azerbaijan.
The mathematician Liu Hui, who lived in the 3rd century AD, became the founder of classical Chinese mathematical theory and occupies an important place in the history of world mathematics. In November 2023, at the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference, a proposal was approved to declare 2024–2025 the "Year of Liu Hui."
