GUANGZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) — Eight people were killed in a fire that broke out in a residential building in Shantou, south China's Guangdong Province, on Tuesday evening, local authorities said.
The fire broke out at 9:20 p.m. in the city's Chaonan district and was extinguished around 10 p.m., according to a statement released by the district fire and rescue department early Wednesday morning.
As a result of the fire, 8 people died and 4 were injured; all victims were immediately taken to hospital for medical assistance.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the damaged residential building was a four-story reinforced concrete structure, where the fire affected an area of approximately 150 square meters.
The causes of the incident are currently being investigated.
