GUANGZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) — A total of 12 people were killed in a fire that broke out in a residential building in Shantou, south China's Guangdong Province, on Tuesday evening, local authorities said Wednesday.

The fire broke out at 9:20 p.m. in the city's Chaonan district and was extinguished at around 10 p.m., according to a statement released by the district fire and rescue department early Wednesday morning.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the burning residential building was a self-built four-story reinforced concrete structure, and the fire covered an area of approximately 150 square meters.

The cause of the fire is currently being determined.
