Beijing, December 10 (Xinhua) — China has become the first country in the world to hold more than 5 million valid domestic invention patents. And in terms of the number of international patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the country has led the world for six consecutive years, the National Intellectual Property Administration (NIPA) reported on Tuesday.

According to the State Inspectorate for Information Security, as of the end of June 2025, the number of patents for high-value inventions in China increased to 15.3 units per 10,000 people, exceeding the target of 12 units per 10,000 people set for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).

The rate of implementation of scientific and technological achievements from universities and research institutes is steadily increasing. Notably, the rate of implementation of patents for inventions by enterprises in production increased from 44.9 percent in 2020 to 53.3 percent in 2024.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China's intellectual property sector underwent a strategic shift from quantitative accumulation to quality improvement, according to data from the State Intellectual Property Institution.

This transition has accelerated the commercialization of patents for high-value inventions, demonstrating the growth of the country's innovative potential and thereby laying a solid foundation for accelerating the process of achieving a high level of scientific and technological independence and self-sufficiency during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).
