JAKARTA, December 9 (Xinhua) — At least 18 people were killed in a fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon at the Terra Drone office building in central Jakarta, local media reported.
All 18 victims were reportedly found inside the seven-story building after being trapped as flames quickly engulfed several floors. Their bodies were transported by ambulance to the police hospital in East Jakarta for further identification.
Rescuers used ladders to evacuate several survivors trapped on the upper floors when the fire started. Dozens of firefighters and several fire engines were deployed to bring the blaze under control.
Local media reports indicate that other victims are still believed to be inside the building.
Search and rescue operations will continue until late into the night. Authorities are working to confirm the final death toll and determine the cause of the fire.
Officials have not yet provided details on how many people were in the building when the fire started.
