BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) — As of November 20, 2025, trade between residents of border areas in Ereenhot, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, located on the border between China and Mongolia, exceeded 700 million yuan (about 98.9 million U.S. dollars), an increase of 32 percent compared to the same period last year, the Neimenggu Ribao daily reported on Monday.
According to the Department of Commerce of Xilin Gol Province, which administers Ereen City, 694 million yuan of the above figure came from trade in goods processed locally, while trade in goods for resale amounted to 8.8 million yuan.
In 2017, with the approval of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government, a reciprocal trade zone between residents of border areas was officially launched in the city of Ereen. In April 2023, it began implementing a policy for the on-site processing of goods imported through this trade.
Ereenhot is the largest border crossing opened between China and Mongolia, and a pilot city for processing imported goods through trade between residents of border areas. Taking full advantage of the policy that "imports of goods worth less than 8,000 yuan are duty-free for residents of border areas," the Ereenhot City Government is actively implementing the "border trade, on-site processing" model.
Thanks to procedural simplification measures such as “trusted declaration” and “direct transportation”, the efficiency of customs clearance of goods imported and exported within the framework of the above-mentioned type of trade has significantly increased, which has also contributed to a reduction in customs clearance costs.
As of today, there are 20 processing plants, 23 mutual aid groups and 7 cooperatives for border residents within the Erenhot border crossing point, and the number of registered border residents has reached 13,255.
