NEW DELHI, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) — At least 23 people were killed in a fire at a nightclub in the Indian state of Goa around midnight on Saturday, local media reported, citing officials early Sunday morning.

Several tourists were among the dead in a tragic incident at a nightclub in Arpora in North Goa district, reports the Press Trust of India.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who visited the scene shortly after the fire, ordered an investigation into the incident. "Those responsible will be held accountable under the strictest laws," he wrote on social media.

According to local police, a preliminary investigation has shown that the fire may have started as a result of a gas cylinder explosion. –0–
