Phnom Penh/Bangkok, December 7 (Xinhua) — Cambodia's Defense Ministry said Sunday that Thai troops opened fire on Cambodian positions, but that Cambodian troops did not return fire. That same day, the Thai military accused Cambodia of firing first, adding that Thailand was forced to retaliate.
Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Mali Socheata stated in a press release that at 2:15 PM local time, Thai armed forces launched an attack on Cambodian troops in the border area of Preah Vihear Province. While Cambodia did not retaliate, it immediately contacted the Thai side and called for an immediate ceasefire. The Thai armed forces reportedly ceased fire at 2:32 PM.
According to the press release, Cambodian forces are currently closely monitoring the situation, exercising maximum caution and vigilance. Cambodia has also informed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Observer Mission of the incident and plans to request an investigation.
Thailand's Second Army Region announced on Sunday that Cambodian troops launched an attack on the Cambodia-Thailand border in Thailand's Sisaket Province at 2:16 PM local time, prompting Thai forces to respond in accordance with established rules of engagement. According to the Thai side, the clash ended at 2:50 PM, but border units remain on high alert due to concerns about a wider escalation.
According to Thai media, two Thai soldiers were wounded, one of whom received a gunshot wound to the leg and the other to the chest.
Thai government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun is closely monitoring the situation at the border and has instructed the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces to take all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty and ensure public safety.
