CHENGDU, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the importance of cooperation and mutual understanding in overcoming modern challenges in a speech at a university in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The French leader concluded his three-day state visit to China with a speech at Sichuan University on Friday.
Emmanuel Macron noted that humanity is currently undergoing profound transformations affecting our way of life, our environment, and the future of the planet. He emphasized the need not only to cooperate but also to strengthen mutual understanding, get to know each other better, and engage in collective reflection to develop practical solutions to pressing issues such as the climate crisis.
As the President added, humanity has the capacity to reach beyond national and geographical boundaries and develop a common agenda for peace, prosperity and climate, based on respect and a sense of responsibility, which will enable all people to move forward.
In recent years, Sichuan University has established and deepened partnerships with a number of higher education institutions in France, including the Paris Institute of Political Studies, the University of Paris-Nanterre, the University of Toulouse, and the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations.
In 1981, Chengdu and the French city of Montpellier established permanent friendly ties, becoming the first pair of sister cities between China and France.
After visiting the university, Emmanuel Macron met with French tennis players who were competing at the 2025 International Table Tennis Federation Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu on Friday afternoon. He played a friendly match against Chinese athletes alongside the French team.
